🌧 When the Forecast Wins

Rainy Day Things to Do
With Kids in Central NJIndoor options in Somerset County and just beyond

Everything here works in rain, snow or a heat wave. Sorted by age, because a venue that thrills an eight-year-old can be miserable with a toddler.

How this list works. Every entry gets a name, a town, what it actually is and who it actually suits. We deliberately do not publish anyone else's opening hours or prices — those change constantly, and a guide that is out of date is worse than no guide at all. Every place links to its own site. Check there before you drive.

Space Play Academy is ours. It is on these lists where it belongs and described on the same terms as everything else, and it is marked so you never have to wonder.

The List

The hard part of a rainy day with a toddler is finding somewhere they can be loud without you apologising. These qualify.

The twin LED racing slides at Space Play Academy, running down into the ball pit

Space Play Academy

Hillsborough Ours

SuitsAges 1–12, and genuinely both ends of that. Under-2s play free alongside a paid sibling.

Questions we get asked

Where can I take my kids on a rainy day in Somerset County?

Space Play Academy in Hillsborough for ages 1–12, Branchburg Sports Complex for laser tag and an indoor playground, Iron Peak in Hillsborough for climbing and a ninja course, Yestercades in Somerville for a retro arcade, and the Environmental Education Center at Lord Stirling Park in Basking Ridge, which has an indoor exhibit and is free.

What is there to do indoors with a toddler when it rains?

A library story time and an indoor play session will cover a morning. Space Play Academy has a soft, enclosed toddler zone and its quietest session runs 9–11 AM on weekends, which matters more than people expect with a small child. The Great Swamp Experience exhibit at Lord Stirling Park is indoors, free, and built to be crawled around.

Is there anything free to do indoors near Hillsborough when it's raining?

Yes. The Environmental Education Center at Lord Stirling Park is free and has an indoor exhibit as well as trails. Every Somerset County Library System branch is free and several run story times. Bridgewater Commons costs nothing to walk around, which on a wet February morning is a more useful fact than it sounds.

Which indoor play place is best for a 2-year-old versus an 8-year-old?

They are rarely the same place. Under-3s want a soft enclosed area and a room that is not overwhelming — that is Space Play Academy's toddler zone, or a library story time. Eight-year-olds want to climb, jump and compete, which is Iron Peak, Sky Zone or the laser tag at Branchburg. If you have both, Space Play covers ages 1–12 under one roof.

One of the places on this list is ours
