Most "things to do with kids" lists are written for six-year-olds. This one is not. Everything here works for a child who has only recently started walking.
How this list works. Every entry gets a name, a town, what it actually is and who it actually suits. We deliberately do not publish anyone else's opening hours or prices — those change constantly, and a guide that is out of date is worse than no guide at all. Every place links to its own site. Check there before you drive.

Basking RidgeFree county nature centre on the edge of the Great Swamp, with about nine miles of trail outside and the Great Swamp Experience exhibit inside — including a beaver lodge small children can crawl into.

BridgewaterAn indoor mall, which on a February morning is a legitimate answer: somewhere warm and flat to walk a restless toddler for an hour without paying for the privilege.

Duke Farms
Hillsborough2,700 acres of meadow, woodland and water with paved trails running through it. Free to visit. Saturday parking passes are reserved in advance from April to October, so check before a weekend trip.

Franklin Township685 acres with a large playground, a rose garden, paddle boats and a putting course, fronting the D&R Canal and the Millstone River. The park is free; the paddle boats and putting course are paid and seasonal.

Space Play Academy

Somerset County Library System story times are free and designed for exactly this age. Duke Farms in Hillsborough has paved trails a stroller handles. The Environmental Education Center at Lord Stirling Park is free and has an indoor exhibit with a beaver lodge small children can crawl into. For indoor play, Space Play Academy has a soft enclosed toddler zone and under-2s play free alongside a paid sibling.
Is indoor play worth it for a toddler, or is it just for older kids?
It depends entirely on whether the place has a genuinely separate toddler area. A one-year-old in a room full of eight-year-olds has a bad time. Look for a soft, enclosed zone and ask what the quietest session is — at Space Play Academy that is 9–11 AM at weekends, and weekday mornings are calmer still.
What is there to do with a toddler when it rains in Somerset County?
A library story time, the indoor Great Swamp Experience exhibit at Lord Stirling Park, or an indoor play session. Walking a mall is not glamorous but it is warm, flat and free, which at this age is most of what you need.
